Cuba Libre

White Rum 60ml/2oz
Cola 120ml/4oz
Lime Juice 30ml/1oz

The Cuba Libre, also known as the “Rum and Coke,” is a classic cocktail that has been enjoyed for over a century. The cocktail is made with rum, Coca-Cola, and lime juice, and is typically served over ice in a highball glass.

The origins of the Cuba Libre can be traced back to the late 19th century and the Spanish-American War. American soldiers, who were stationed in Cuba during the war, began mixing rum with Coca-Cola, which had recently been introduced to the island. The soldiers would often add a squeeze of lime juice to the drink, which helped to balance out the sweetness of the Coca-Cola. They would also often shout “Cuba Libre!” (Free Cuba!) while drinking it, as a form of celebration of Cuba’s freedom from Spanish rule.

The Cuba Libre quickly became a popular drink among American soldiers, and soon made its way back to the United States. It was initially popular in the southern states, where Coca-Cola was first produced, but soon became a popular drink across the country.

The key ingredient in a Cuba Libre is rum. Rum is a spirit that is made from sugarcane juice or molasses, and is known for its distinctive sweet and slightly fruity flavor. In a Cuba Libre, rum provides a strong base for the other flavors to build upon. The most traditional rum for this cocktail is the light rum, also known as white or silver rum.

Coca-Cola is another important ingredient in a Cuba Libre. Coca-Cola is a carbonated soft drink that is known for its sweet and slightly bitter flavor. In a Cuba Libre, Coca-Cola adds a touch of sweetness and carbonation to the drink. Lime juice, the final ingredient, adds a touch of acidity and freshness to the drink.

Directions

  1. Fill a highball glass with ice
  2. Add 60ml/2oz of White Rum
  3. Add 120ml/4oz of Cola
  4. Add 30ml/1oz of Lime Juice
  5. Shake well and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
  6. Sprinkle fresh ground nutmeg on top (Optional)

Over the years, the Cuba Libre has been the subject of many variations, with some bartenders experimenting with different types of rum, Coca-Cola, and lime juice. Some popular variations include the use of dark rum instead of light rum, which gives the drink a richer and more complex flavor. Some bartenders also like to use a flavored lime juice, such as passion fruit or grapefruit, to add an extra layer of flavor to the drink.

The Cuba Libre is a classic cocktail that has been enjoyed for over a century. Its combination of rum, Coca-Cola, and lime juice creates a refreshing and balanced taste that is perfect for any occasion. Whether you’re out on the town or hosting a party at home, a Cuba Libre is sure to be a hit with your guests. It’s a simple and easy to make cocktail that is perfect for those who prefer a sweet and refreshing drink.
