Manhattan

Whiskey 60ml/2oz
Sweet Vermouth 30ml/1oz

In the vast universe of cocktails, where flavors collide and histories intertwine, few concoctions stand as boldly as the Manhattan. Revered for its sophistication, depth of flavor, and a legacy that stretches back over a century, the Manhattan is not just a drink; it’s a testament to the craft of mixology and the cultural heritage of New York City.

Like many classic cocktails, the exact origins of the Manhattan are shrouded in the mists of time and the fog of legend. However, the prevailing belief is that it emerged in the late 19th century, somewhere around the 1860s to the 1870s, in the borough from which it takes its name.

Legend has it that the cocktail was first mixed at a banquet hosted by Jennie Jerome, the mother of Winston Churchill, in honor of presidential candidate Samuel J. Tilden. The recipe allegedly spread like wildfire after this event, becoming a staple in the bars and saloons of Manhattan.

At its core, a traditional Manhattan is a simple yet elegant blend of whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters, typically garnished with a cherry. The magic, however, lies in the proportions and the quality of ingredients.

Directions

  1. Fill a mixing glass with ice.
  2. Add 60ml/2oz of Whiskey
  3. Add 30ml/1oz of Sweet Vermouth
  4. Stir well until chilled, about 30 seconds.
  5. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass or coupe.
  6. Garnish with a cherry (and optionally, an orange twist).

The Manhattan cocktail has endured through the ages, transcending the boundaries of time and trends. It has been immortalized in literature, celebrated in film, and embraced by generations of cocktail enthusiasts. Its enduring appeal lies in its versatility—it can be sipped as an aperitif or savored as a nightcap, enjoyed in a cozy speakeasy or a bustling rooftop bar.

As the craft cocktail renaissance continues to evolve, the Manhattan remains a cornerstone of mixology, inspiring bartenders to push the boundaries of creativity while honoring the timeless principles of balance and craftsmanship. So let us raise our glasses to the Manhattan cocktail—may it continue to delight and inspire for generations to come. Cheers!
