The Martinez Cocktail is a classic drink that has been around for over 150 years. It is considered to be the precursor to the Martini, and is often referred to as the “great-grandfather” of the Martini. The origins of the Martinez Cocktail are somewhat shrouded in mystery, with different stories and theories circulating about its creation. However, the most widely accepted version of the drink’s history is that it was first made in the early 1860s in the town of Martinez, California.

The Martinez Cocktail is a gin-based drink that is typically made with Old Tom gin, sweet vermouth, maraschino liqueur, and orange bitters. The gin used in the Martinez Cocktail is typically Old Tom gin, which is a sweeter and less juniper-forward gin than London Dry gin. Old Tom gin was the most popular type of gin during the 19th century and was widely used in cocktails of the time. The sweet vermouth used in the Martinez Cocktail is typically a red or “Italian” vermouth, which is sweeter and less dry than a white or “French” vermouth. The maraschino liqueur is a cherry-flavored liqueur that is made from the juice of the marasca cherry, which is a type of sour cherry. The orange bitters are a type of bitters that are flavored with orange peel and other botanicals.

Directions

  1. Fill a mixing glass with ice
  2. Add 45ml/1.5oz of Gin
  3. Add 45ml/1.5oz of Sweet Vermouth
  4. Add 8ml/.25oz of Maraschino Liqueur
  5. Add 2 Dashes of Orange Bitters
  6. Stir until well chilled
  7. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass

In terms of flavor profile, the Martinez Cocktail is a complex and well-balanced drink. The gin provides a juniper-forward base that is complemented by the sweet and herbal notes of the vermouth and maraschino liqueur. The orange bitters add a subtle citrus note and a touch of bitterness that helps to balance out the sweetness of the other ingredients. The end result is a drink that is both sweet and dry, with a rich and complex flavor that makes it perfect for sipping.

One of the reasons for the Martinez Cocktail’s enduring popularity is its versatility. The drink can be made with a wide variety of gins and vermouths, which allows for endless variations and experimentation. For example, a Martinez Cocktail made with a London Dry gin will have a different flavor profile than one made with an Old Tom gin. Similarly, a Martinez Cocktail made with a French vermouth will have a different flavor than one made with an Italian vermouth. This versatility makes the Martinez Cocktail a great choice for both novice and experienced mixologists.
